After many years as our steadfast and wonderful sponsor for the marathon, Moose’s Tooth has bowed out, allowing the marathon’s founding sponsor, Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse, to return. We are deeply appreciative of the support we have received from Moose’s Tooth/Broken Tooth/Bear Tooth and are happy to announce that Bear Tooth Theatrepub will continue to present the wildly popular Movie Night on the Thursday before race weekend.
Here’s a bit of RunFest history: when Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehoouse opened in 1994, the owners wanted to sponsor a race. At that time Chilkoot Charlie’s was the sponsor of the Snow Goose Marathon, Half, and 10K. In 1996, Humpy’s owners offered to take on that sponsorship and because the Snow Goose restaurant had recently opened and bore no relation to the race, the name was changed to Humpy’s Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K. The start and end of the race, which had been at Westchester Lagoon, was moved to its current location, just outside Humpy’s.
When the suite of races was renamed Big Wild Life Runs back in 2008, Anchorage Running Club retained the name Humpy’s for the marathon and thus began the attachment of individual sponsors to their races within the umbrella of an overall name for all the races offered each August weekend.
The close proximity of Humpys, and its sister restaurant Williwaw, to the start and finish of the Sunday races opens a multitude of possibilities for the restaurant’s involvement. We are thrilled to have Humpy’s return "to the fold" and hope they also become a long term sponsor.
