This is not the news that we wanted to share with our running community but after careful deliberation due to escalating conditions surrounding COVID-19, the Board of Directors of the Anchorage Running Club and the Race Directors of the Anchorage RunFest made the extremely difficult decision to cancel the 2020 RunFest. We know this news is disappointing. We’re disappointed too.
We believe this is the responsible action to take during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The health and safety of our runners, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators remains our highest priority. We want to keep our community as safe as possible.
We are extremely grateful for all our supporters and ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate these uncharted waters. It is difficult to ask hundreds of individuals to volunteer for a race in our economically hard-hit city; their focus needs to be elsewhere. Taking into account all of the planning and preparation that is coordinated within the RunFest Race Committee and with our partners in the community, as well as the Alaska’s early winter, cancellation (versus postponement) of the 2020 of RunFest is unfortunately the only viable option.
We’ve made the difficult decision to announce now hoping it relieves some of the stress brought on by this time of uncertainty. Please keep in mind that the current situation is frustrating and scary for everybody, including our Board and Race Committee. We ask again for your continued patience, understanding, and kindness as we all work forward.
A majority of our participants are well into their training programs with their sights set on crossing the finish line in Anchorage in August. While that is no longer possible, we recognize the time, effort and commitment you have already put forth. We hope you continue your training in a way that is safe and follows local COVID-19 guidelines. We encourage you to support each other and our community in every way possible.
As a small Anchorage non-profit organization, we pride ourselves on hosting an annual world-class event, amidst the renowned beauty of Alaska, with the assistance of our sponsors and community. In order to preserve our ability to provide this unique RunFest experience for years to come, we must uphold our no refund policy. The time and effort that goes into planning for race weekend is well underway and a sizable portion of our expenditures have already been incurred.
The Anchorage RunFest is providing the following options to currently registered participants:
Deferral: Defer your full entry fee to the 2021 Anchorage RunFest. Deferrals must be submitted by June 30, 2020. Request a deferral here.
Donation: The Anchorage Running Club is an Alaskan nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status. Please know that the donation of your race fee will help ensure that we can continue to provide a world-class experience. Events are expensive, even when cancelled, and donating your registration fees help cover our costs. We deeply appreciate your generosity and look forward to seeing you at an event soon. Donate your entry fee here.
Looking ahead, we sincerely hope you are able to join us next year on August 21-22! The 2021 Anchorage RunFest will provide a celebratory occasion to participate in a sport that endures difficult circumstances. We will come back from this crisis even stronger.
