RRCA Western Division Championship Event
The 2021 United Physical Therapy 49K has been designated a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Western Division Championship Event. RRCA Championship Events highlight well-run, community-focused events. RRCA awards will be presented to the top male and female in each of the following categories: open; masters (40+); grand masters (50+); and senior grand masters (60+).
Our 49K Ultra is meant for those interested in a bit more of a challenge than that presented by the marathon distance. And then there’s the uniqueness of running a 49K in the 49th state in the Union.
The 49K Ultra (or 30.44860 miles for the metrically challenged) course begins in the heart of downtown Anchorage. Runners head west on 6th Avenue, north on H Street, then straight ahead on Christensen Drive to 2nd Avenue where the course turns left to join the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. They run past Westchester Lagoon, Earthquake Park, Postmark Drive and Point Woronzof. Their first turnaround point is approximately 1/4 mile below the top of the Kincaid hill by the chalet. Back at Westchester Lagoon runners bear right (east) on the Chester Creek Trail. From the Chester Creek turnaround (the roundabout at the base of the hill beyond, or east of, the bridge to East High School) runners return to the lagoon and head back to the finish line in downtown Anchorage.
There are five uphills of significance:
1. Earthquake Park at mile 4
2. Point Woronzof at about mile 5.5
3. Kincaid Park at mile 10.5
4. Near Goose Lake at about mile 23.5
5. Christensen hill at about mile 29.5.
The 49K course is USATF certified.
The 49K field is limited to the first 150 entrants.
The ultramarathon starts and finishes on 6th Avenue between F and G Street adjacent to the Performing Arts Center in downtown Anchorage. Start time is 8:00 AM.
The course closes at 3:30 PM. Runners must cross the finish line by 3:30 PM to be considered official finishers. Runners must reach Valley of the Moon Park aid station at mile 27 by 2:30 PM.

49K Ultra Awards
RunFest Ultra awards are given to the top three over-all male and female finishers as well as the top male and female finishers in each 5 year age group. The top three finishers will receive awards in their respective age groups as well. Awards will be distributed in Town Square Park. As in the past, the first place male and female 49K finishers will each win a round trip certificate good for coach travel on Alaska Airlines.
In addition to the above awards, RRCA will be presenting awards to the top male and female in each of the following categories: open; masters (40+); grand masters (50+); and senior grand masters (60+).
All awards are based on chip times -- the time elapsed from when a runner crosses the timing mat at start line till when that runner crosses the timing mat at the finish line.
Sleeping Lady Challenge
The Anchorage Runfest is one of four Anchorage Running Club yearly events. Successful completion of eligible races in three of these four events can qualify a runner for the unique Sleeping Lady Challenge medal. See more information regarding the Sleeping Lady Challenge.
